Why Kraków Impressed Me with Its Cleanliness
After Warsaw, Kraków is one of the fastest-growing cities in Poland, and its reputation as the Kraków cleanest city in the world has gained global recognition for its cleanliness. In late 2025, the city was ranked among the cleanest cities in the world. In fact, a global study by Radical Storage reported that “Kraków ranked as the cleanest city in the world, with 98.5% positive cleanliness-related reviews.” This kind of ranking is based on online travelers’ reviews, which mainly reflect their overall impressions of cleanliness in the streets, parks, and public areas of cities around the world.
When I first arrived in Kraków four years ago, one thing instantly caught my attention that was its incredible cleanliness. I literally got shocked as I haven’t seen any kind of plastic or dirt anywhere around the city.
Before coming to Poland, I had never seen such spotless streets and well-maintained public places in my entire life. I thought how a place could be so clean and beautiful? I wonder because it is not just a surface-level, but a deep-level cleanliness that keeps the city fresh, organized, and beautiful.
But do you know what makes this city so clean and beautiful? Let’s explore.
The Waste Management System Behind Kraków’s Clean Streets
The answer lies in its powerful waste management system where waste is not just thrown away, but carefully managed, recycled, and even converted into energy. Beyond such well-planned system, what truly makes this city so clean is its responsible citizens who strictly follow rules, respect public spaces, and have a strong sense of civic pride.
The entire city follows a strict waste segregation system that begins at home. According to MPO Krakow guidelines, “Residents are required to segregate waste according to the city’s color-coded system.” This means that every resident needs to separate waste into five categories: blue bins for paper, yellow for plastic and metal, green for glass, brown for bio waste, and black for mixed waste. This simple habit of citizens plays a huge role because when waste is sorted correctly at home, it becomes easier to recycle and process later.
Once the waste is collected from households, Kraków’s organized waste management system takes over. The city follows a structured approach based on selective waste collection to improve efficiency and sustainability. After collection, waste is processed through advanced sorting and recycling facilities that help recover reusable materials, reduce waste, and minimize environmental impact.
How Citizens Help Keep Kraków Clean
To show how citizens in Kraków take responsibility for cleanliness, I would like to share an incident I have witnessed. Once my husband and I were standing at the bus station, which was near to our building house, waiting for a bus. At that time, we noticed a woman walking with her two small kids from a distance. One of her kids ate chocolate and threw a small piece of wrapper on the road. The women saw that and mumbled something in Polish, then she picked up the wrapper and threw it in a nearby dustbin by herself.
We didn’t understand what she said as we don’t know Polish language, but we understood that in soft language she was guiding him to throw the wrapper always in the dustbin instead of throwing it on the road. As a result, after having the rest of the chocolate, that kid threw the remaining half of the wrapper in the same dustbin.
It shows that kid imitated what his mother did before sometime. If that woman had left the wrapper on the road as it is and gone ahead, the child would have done the same. It means kids learn everything from the actions of adults who are maybe their parents or others. Overall, this incident proves that discipline is something that needs to be instilled in children at a young age, and then it becomes a habit with them later.
I want to share another incident that many people might find hard to imagine. Whenever we step out for daily activities such as walking or shopping, it is a very common sight to see residents taking their dogs out for a walk to get some fresh air. What is truly remarkable is the sense of responsibility these pet owners display. If their dogs happen to relieve themselves in public spaces, the owners immediately clean up after them. They carefully collect the waste in a plastic bag and dispose of it properly in nearby dustbins, which are conveniently available throughout the area.
This small but meaningful act demonstrates their strong civic responsibility and respect for public spaces. It is a small action, but it makes a significant difference in keeping the city clean and pleasant for everyone.
Public Hygiene Rules and Responsible Living in Kraków
Another key point we have observed while living here is that urinating or defecating in public places is strictly prohibited. According to Kraków municipal regulations, “Polluting or littering public spaces such as streets, squares, and green areas can result in a fine of up to 500 PLN.” It shows such actions are considered illegal and can result in heavy penalties if anyone attempts to do so.
What stands out is that well-maintained public toilets are widely available and easily accessible across the city, which greatly supports cleanliness and public hygiene.
We have also personally visited several government offices and hospitals, and we found them to be exceptionally clean and hygienic. This reflects a strong commitment to maintaining high standards of public health and sanitation. All these practices and discipline play a significant role in keeping the city clean, organized, and pleasant for everyone.
Whenever I see the cleanliness of Kraków, I am reminded of the great Indian philosopher and social activist Mahatma Gandhi, who said, “Sanitation is more important than independence,” because a clean environment is essential for a healthy life and mental well-being.
Why Kraków Deserves Its Reputation
Finally, I would say that Kraków’s cleanliness is not by chance; it is the result of an efficient waste management system, strict government rules and fines, high civic sense among citizens, and regular maintenance of public spaces.
All these factors work together to create a clean, neat, and pleasant environment. This not only keeps the city clean but also helps protect the environment for the future.
After witnessing all these aspects of cleanliness, I can confidently say that Kraków truly deserves its reputation as one of the cleanest cities in the world.
